May 2010
May 01/2010: May garden panorama.
May 01/2010: I originally thought this was a bed of baby parsley plants, grown from some seed heads I'd sprinkled last winter. But we tasted them, and they're not parsely... now that they are bigger, I think they are **STRAWBERRIES**! The offspring of some mouldy and slug-eaten berries I tossed here last fall.
May 01/2010: Deer fern fiddleheads. (Blechnum spicant) This is the only fern that we've planted in the yard, and the only deer fern. The other ferns in the bed were here when we first moved in - they're more feathery ferns, but this deer fern is a very distinctive local variety.
May 01/2010: A closeup of one of the fiddleheads.
May 01/2010: Hyacinths... I think? These were also here when we first moved in.
May 07/2010: A Painted Lady Butterfly drinking from our hyacinths!
May 07/2010: One of our mystery plants.
May 08/2010: 'Gold Nugget' tomatoes, planted earlier this week. When I was little, my mom grew baby yellow tomatoes, so I was really excited to find these at the hardware store this year! The outer leaves are a little sun-scorched, but the new leaves should be better adapted to their new home.
May 08/2010: A baby parsley plant! We had some parsely go to seed last fall and we scattered the seeds everywhere - I'm finding little babies like this all over.
May 08/2010: Another volunteer - a potato. I don't even think we planted potatoes here - I think this is leftover from when this area was a weed pile.
May 08/2010: A different kind of volunteer - a six-leaf-clover! Crazy. There's another 4-leaf one at the tip of my finger.
May 08/2010: Baby carrots. Related to the parsely, but more frilly than curly. I really love it when tasty things reseed themselves!
May 08/2010: Another new addition to the garden this year - a Lavender Crystal miniature rose. This one came from the Van Dusen garden sale... it was the most fragrant one there - smells like perfume or soap.
May 08/2010: The same Lavender Crystal bud. I also picked this variety for its frilly petals. The photo doesn't really do justice to the shade of lavender/mauve...
May 08/2010: The honeybees are back! The chives are blooming like crazy and there were several bees in the patch.
May 08/2010: The crows aren't taking as many peanuts now that it's spring, but they still come by for a snack now and then. Yesterday I saw one pull something squirmy out of the dirt where I'd been digging - they like it when I unearth tasty bugs for them :)
